Measuring depths by counting seconds

To estimate depth by counting seconds, drop an object like a stone into a well or hole, start counting when you let go, and stop when you hear the splash or impact. Because gravity accelerates a falling {object} and sound takes time to travel back up, the math relies on total elapsed time.

Quick Estimates (Ignoring Sound Travel)

For shallow drops under 2 seconds, you can roughly estimate the distance using free-fall gravity math:

1 second: About 5 meters (16 feet) deep

2 seconds: About 20 meters (65 feet) deep

3 seconds: About 44 meters (144 feet) deep

Formula: Depth ≈ 4.9 × (seconds)² in meters (or 16 × (seconds)² in feet)

Why Deep Wells Need Correction

As holes get deeper, the time it takes for the sound of the splash to travel back up to your ears becomes a larger part of your counted seconds. Sound travels at roughly 340 meters per second (1,100 feet per second).

If your total counted time is large (for instance, 5 or more seconds), using the simple gravity formula alone will overestimate the depth because a chunk of those seconds was just the sound moving upward. True calculation requires subtracting the travel time of the sound using a quadratic equation.

If you need to count seconds in your head, there are precise techniques for it.

You don't count 1,2,3,4. You count 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 4,000 etc. for impeccable timing.

Another way is to count "1 elephant", "2 elephant", "3 elephant", "4 elephant", etc. as a rhythmic tool used to pace seconds.
