Oval Plates

Oval plates are used for serving elongated foods, main courses with side dishes, and family-style meals because their shape saves table space and frames linear arrangements.

Common Uses for Oval Plates

  • Elongated Foods: Perfect for foods like grilled kebabs on skewers, sushi rolls, fish, and tandoori chicken.

  • One-Plate Meals: Ideal for Japanese curry, where the long shape helps separate the rice from the liquid roux, or for omelets and waffles.

  • Main Courses with Sides: Great for placing a main protein in the center with flanking vegetables or sauces.

  • Appetizers and Tastings: Excellent for serving neat rows of small tapas, finger foods, or charcuterie.

  • For Serving: accordion burgers, sometimes called sliders, spread out the layers across the plate instead of stacking them with a skewer in the center.

Benefits of Oval Shapes

  • Space Saving: They fit better alongside other dishes on a crowded table compared to wide round plates.

  • Portion Control: Medium and large sizes work well for individual main meals or shared platters.

Rectangular Plates

Rectangular plates are used to serve elongated foods, appetizers, and shared platters with a modern and clean presentation.

Common Uses

  • Sushi and Sashimi: The linear shape allows sushi rolls and pieces of fish to line up in an orderly, minimalist style.

  • Appetizers and Finger Foods: Great for serving spring rolls, bruschetta, cheese bites, or small pastries.

  • Elongated Foods: Perfect for items like kebabs, taquitos, or tandoori chicken that fit a straight line.

  • Shared Platters: Used as larger platters for appetizers, fruit, or charcuterie when hosting guests.

  • Desserts: Ideal for slicing cakes or lining up cookies and baked treats.

Benefits of Rectangular Plates

  • Modern Style: Their straight edges bring a sleek, geometric look to the table.

  • Space Efficiency: They fit well down the center of a table or alongside round plates to mix up table settings.

  • Containment: Slightly raised rims help keep sauces and lose foods from spilling off the edges.
