Ship layout in nautical terms

Ship Layout

Bow

The part of ship that faces forward when the ship is underway.
The bow is usually distinguished by a sharply angled hull, which provides less resistance,
making it easier for the ship to plow though water.

Amidship

Midway between the bow and the stern. Also, midship(s) about midway #point.
Athwartship (across the vessel sideways)
Preship/ Unship / Reship / Transship (Tranship)

Stern

The stern is located at the end of the ship opposite from the bow.

Forward

Forward on a ship means toward the direction of the bow.

Note: Ten-forward aboard the USS Enterprise 1701-D in Star★Trek /TNG!

Aft

Aft on a ship means towards the direction of the stern.

Port

Port refers to the left side of the ship, when facing forward.

Starboard

Starboard refers to the right side of the ship, when facing forward.

Lights

Red light

Indicates a vessel's port (left) side.

Green light
Indicates a vessel's starboard (right) side.

A wise man once said, be careful who you let on your ship, because some people will sink the whole ship just because they can't be the captain.

Ship-type prefixes

Ship-road (this word is now obsolete)
